So you’re…ENGAGED!
This is such an exciting time for couples. I always encourage you guys to first, take a little time to soak it all in! You’ve just said yes to your best friend and there is nothing sweeter. Don’t let the wedding planning stress you out before you’ve even had time to enjoy being engaged!
Once you’ve had some time to say “my fiance” (yea I know it still feels weird calling Trevor my husband and it’s been over a year) then you can start planning fun things like YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION! Then the daunting question comes up as you start planning outfits. So I’ve put together some tips, and inspo for you guys on what to wear for your engagement session!
What to Wear for Your Engagement Session
Dressy vs. Casual
I always recommend at least two outfits – one dressier and one more casual. You can start with whichever outfit you prefer, but I may recommend one or the other depending on our game plan for your session. Make sure to keep anything you’re not wearing right away on hangers in the car so they don’t wrinkle.
Patterns > Graphics
Patterns are totally ok, so don’t think you have to wear only solid colors for your outfits to photograph well. Graphics however do not photograph well, and are pretty distracting. You want the focus to be on the two of you and all your love and joy, not trying to read the front of your tee shirt. I know, my husband loves his graphic tees, but please leave them at home for your engagement sesh.
If your dress or his shirt has a pattern, try and match your solid to one of the colors in the pattern. Below this couple perfectly pulled off the dressy look and tied in the pretty blues in the floral dress with his blue dress shirt.

Don’t be afraid to be BOLD!
Make your outfits your own with accessories, colors or patterns. Dress it up with a cute scarf, or some bold jewelry or bright nail colors. Dress up a casual outfit with some stylish boots or a cute jacket. There are tons of ways that you can showcase your style and be bold without taking away from your photo and the joy and love we’re trying to capture!
Should we match?
You can, but I feel like matching is a little 2001. It’s ok to allow your outfit choices to express your personalities and styles. A great way to match without being too matchy-matchy is to style your clothing selections. This couple matched with the color white, but instead of doing the 2001 style where you all wear dark jeans and the same white shirt, he’s got a white dress shirt and she’s wearing a cute, white, lace dress. They’re still matching, but their unique styles are expressed with the styles they chose to wear. And it made for some beautiful photos!
Empty your pockets.
Make sure to leave your phone, wallets, chapstick and anything else in the car so your pockets don’t have any weird bumps in the photos. Don’t worry, I’ve got a backpack for your keys and anything else you need to toss in there while we shoot.
Clean the ring!
I always like to sneak in a few ring shots while you’re changing outfits, so take the ring in for some professional cleaning. That way it’s super sparkly and POPS in all the pictures! Plus, I adore detail photos and love capturing the in between moments as well as the planned moments.
Plan ahead – try thing on.
Last, but definitely not least, try everything on! There is nothing worse than feeling like your outfit doesn’t quite fit right. I know for me, I struggle with ordering online because I really need to see things in person to know how they fit. And if it’s too tight I’m definitely uncomfortable. Try not to wait until the last minute to buy your outfits, or dig through the closet. This way you can steam or iron anything that might be a little wrinkly, make sure your jeans fit right and that your dress hugs you in all the right places!
