Choosing what to wear for fall family photos is HARD work, but we want to make your life easier with 5 tips for fall family photos!
How are we going to do that?
I’m so glad you asked! Here are some of our favorite tips to help make outfit planning a breeze – and some links to help you shop. Family photos don’t have to be stressful and your family deserves to look and feel their best!
TIP 1 – Dress Mom First!
As a woman, I know how difficult it can be finding clothing that makes you feel It’s less stressful for Mom to choose her outfit first, and then dress everyone else around her outfit. Mom’s if you’re looking for a comfortable dress that’s also stylish, check out Pink Blush! I absolutely love the quality of their clothes and they have great styles for women, plus size and maternity outfits!
TIP 2 – Plan What to Wear Ahead of Time
Whatever you do, remember to shop for outfits ahead of time. Waiting until the last minute will just add more stress you don’t need. It helps to plan what to wear for fall family photos once you know where you want your photos taken. It’s also a good idea to try and coordinate with the decor in your home if you plan to use these family photos to hang up in the house! It makes decorating so much easier when the colors coordinate!
Plus if you plan ahead (and order ahead for online shopping) you can make sure that the outfits fit properly and that you’ll have plenty of time to iron or steam anything that wrinkles easily. We recommend waiting to dress into anything that easily wrinkles until you arrive at your session. Wrinkles aren’t a part of our normal editing and while we can’t speak for all photographers, it typically a request that would require extra charges for editing.
TIP 3 – Dress the Littles When You Arrive
Dress the little ones when you arrive at the session! This way there’s no chance of an accidental blow out in the car seat, puke stains, food stain or wrinkles on their cute new outfits! It also helps to feed littles before your session so they have full bellies and are happy for pictures. You can also bring easy to eat snacks as a bribe (so probably don’t bring mnms or other melty chcocolatey treats)
We bribed these kiddos above with cheeseburgers…worked like a charm!
Avoiding wrinkles on clothing can be a challenge, so if you know your dress or shirt wrinkles easily, steam it out and bring it to the session, but don’t wear it on the drive over. Put it on a hanger and bring it in the car so you can change into in before your session.
TIP 4 – Choose Comfortable Fabrics
When it comes to what to wear for the littles, comfy fabrics are key! Linens and tulle look really cute, but can be itchy and uncomfortable for picky kiddos (and I know because this was definitely me as a kid…sorry mom) If you know your little ones skin is extra sensitive, avoid uncomfortable fabrics to keep your kiddo happy during photos.
TIP 5
Consider the location when choosing your outfits. In the photo above, the location is very neutral and isn’t very busy, allowing the patterns of their outfits to compliment where we took their photos.
TIP 7
Arguably the most important tip here…HAVE FUN!
Remember that everything doesn’t have to be perfect and that it’s ok if not everyone is looking at the camera at the same time. What’s important is capturing fun memories for your family at wherever you’re at in life.
